3.2. Subspecies

  • Daphnis hypothous moorei (Macleay, 1866) [subspecies according to funet.fi]

3.3. Distribution

The species was described from the island of Ambon in Indonesia.

There is one single specimen found in Scotland. Agassiz et al. (2013: 120) told us: "One Pertshire, 1873: (Clancy et al., 2012: 590). Asiatic."

A.R. Pittaway [Sphingidae of the Western Palaearctic: tripod.com (december 18th 2021)] wrote: "Occurs in the western Palaearctic region as a rare vagrant. However, the frequency is not known because of its confusion with Daphnis nerii. During the last hundred years a number have been discovered within the Middle East; one was even found in Scotland late last century but was probably imported as a pupa with cargo."

3.4. Year of publication of the original description

According to Hemming (1958: 42), volume 3 of „De uitlandsche kapellen“ has the following publication years and authorships

  • 1-104, pl. CXCIII-CCLII Cramer [1779]
  • 105-176, pl. CCLIII-CCLXXXVIII Cramer & Stoll [1780] (“Written by Cramer and published after his death by Caspar Stoll”)
