Die Art wurde nach dem Raupensack beschrieben. Nach dem ICZN Artikel 1.3.6. sind Namen ungültig, die nach 1930 für Lebensspuren lebender Tiere aufgestellt wurden. Im Umkehrschluss ist Coleophora pruniella ein gültiger Name.
