After five years of recording by thousands of volunteers, it provides an up-to-date assessment of our butterflies, the habitats they live in, the threats they face, and the major changes that have occurred since the publication of the previous such atlas in 1984. The body of the book is taken up with species by species accounts, each accompanied by a full-page distribution map and photographs of the butterfly concerned.“

Das Buch musste schon in den ersten beiden Jahren mehrfach nachgedruckt werden, völlig zurecht. Der Fachmann bekommt hier saubere Grundlagen in die Hand, der Amateur findet zudem noch eine riesige Fülle interessanter Details zu den Arten. Ein Atlas ist natürlich nicht in erster Linie ein Bestimmungsbuch; da von allen Arten Farbfotos lebender Falter gezeigt werden, kann man ihn aber durchaus so benutzen. Die beigefügten Ei- und Raupenfotos im Freiland-Habitat regen zur eigenen Suche an.

Der schöne Band – made in Great Britain – kann den Mitteleuropäer eigentlich nur neidisch machen. Wer ab und zu in Westeuropa Urlaub macht, sollte sich diesen Band zulegen. Mit ins Gelände tragen muss man ihn allerdings nicht wollen.
