Herrich-Schäffer (1868: 179) beschrieb seine neue Art (und Gattung) nach einem Tier, das Juan [Johannes Christopher] Gundlach in Kuba gesammelt hatte. Nach der Artseite der [mothphotographersgroup.msstate.edu] erreicht die Art auch Florida und damit die USA. Südwärts gibt es Angaben aus Mexiko, Ecuador und - losgelöst in der ssp. obliqua Todd, 1964 - Santa Catarina in Brasilien.

O. apicina ist in Europa sicher nicht etabliert und wurde bisher auch nur vor 1900 in einem Einzelexemplar aus England erwähnt. Agassiz et al. (2013: 112) führen die Art bei den "adventive species" und schreiben zu England: "Lancashire and near London, C19. South American." [hantsmoths.org.uk] konkretisieren: "Recorded infrequently through accidental importation in produce from Central and South America, recorded in the 19th Century from the banks of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal near Chorley, south Lancashire and as an accidental import to the London area, with no further records to date. Not recorded in Hampshire or on the Isle of Wight to date. No evidence of breeding in the UK."
