3.3. Taxonomy, Nomenclature and Faunistics
The first, and therefore original description of "Bombyx obsoleta" was written by Fabricius (1775: 579). The type locality was given as "nova Hollandia", i.e., Australia. Fabricius (1793: 463) repeated this description under number 175 without providing further details. A few pages earlier, Fabricius (1793: 456) described an obviously quite different "Bombyx obsoleta" from Central America under number 155, which had not yet been mentioned in the 1775 volume. Bombyx obsoleta Fabricius, 1793 (p. 463) is thus a primary homonym of Bombyx obsoleta Fabricius, 1775. However, that other taxon with number 155 already had an older name: Phalaena zea Boddie, 1850 (now Helicoverpa zea Boddie, (1850)).
Laelia obsoleta is restricted to Australia, and — according to the [Atlas of Living Australia] — mainly found along the east coast there..
